JJ Redick Signs Extension with the Lakers
So, JJ Redick has secured an extension with the Lakers. It’s interesting because it comes just a year after starting his role as their head coach, and he still had three years left on his existing contract. You know, the NBA world can be quite dynamic.
During a recent press conference, Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka stated that the extension was simply to clarify Redick’s role as a crucial part of their coaching and performance strategy. It seems like they really value what he brings to the table.
However, Pelinka didn’t disclose the specifics on how many additional years were added to Redick’s contract.
Before last season kicked off, Redick signed a four-year deal that was worth around $32 million. That’s a notable commitment for a first-time head coach, especially in such a demanding environment like Los Angeles.
Last season was a bit of a rollercoaster; the Lakers managed a decent 50-32 record under Redick’s leadership during the regular season. But then they were knocked out in the first round of the playoffs by the Timberwolves, which must’ve been a frustrating experience for everyone involved.
This new deal for Redick is just one part of what has been a bustling offseason for the Lakers. They’ve also made some significant moves, including signing Luka Doncic to a massive three-year, $165 million extension that has player options for 2028-29 after pulling off a major trade with the Mavericks.
Moreover, the Lakers have rounded out their roster with players like DeAndre Ayton, Marcus Smart, and Jake Laravia to complement Doncic and LeBron James. It seems like they are trying to build something really cohesive.
Despite all the offseason changes, James will still be around for the 2025-26 season, opting to continue with the Lakers as he enters the last year of his contract. I can only imagine the conversations happening behind the scenes.
Pelinka reflected on the offseason by saying, “I feel like I’ve accomplished some key objectives.” He emphasized that securing a starting center was essential for the team and that adding some strong wings was also part of the plan. It’s a busy time in Laker Land, but the changes could bring the team closer to where they want to be.
