Tragic Loss of Former Bengals Player Rudi Johnson
Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson, a retired wide receiver in the NFL, is mourning the death of his former Cincinnati Bengals teammate, Rudi Johnson, who passed away on Tuesday in South Florida at the young age of 45.
On a recent episode of the podcast “Night Cap,” which he co-hosts with Pro Football Hall of Famer, Ochocinco reflected on the memories they shared while playing together. “I just lost Dawg yesterday, Rudy Johnson,” he expressed, indicating the depth of their bond during their time in Cincinnati.
Ochocinco printed the significance of their time on the field together, stating, “The great memories we made in Cincinnati and… all of that good stuff.” It’s clear that those years meant a lot to him.
Both Johnsons were part of the 2001 NFL Draft, with Ochocinco being picked in the second round and Rudi in the fourth after a fantastic season at Auburn, where he garnered SEC Offensive Player of the Year accolades.
They played together from 2001 to 2007, a period that Ochocinco looks back on fondly, though he admitted feeling quite “upset” about losing touch with Rudi. “I miss you, young Rudy, and I love you,” he shared, filled with emotion.
Reports from TMZ Sports suggested that Rudi Johnson had been struggling with unspecified mental health challenges prior to his passing, with family sources hinting at a potential battle with chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).
A spokesperson for the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office indicated that the case is being investigated as a potential suicide, noting that there was no immediate evidence of foul play involved.
Mike Brown, the president of the Bengals, remembered Rudi with admiration: “He was a reliable player, productive and extremely popular among his teammates. Everyone liked him and saw him as a dear friend.”
This situation is a stark reminder of the profound impacts our friendships and careers in sports can have, both on and off the field.
