Zelenskyy Discusses Peace Goals Amid Ongoing Conflict
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has indicated that Russia seems prepared for a transition to peace once the war with Ukraine concludes. In a recent interview, he emphasized that his priority isn’t to secure a new term, but rather to focus on achieving peace.
“My goal is to end the war,” Zelenskyy stated during a conversation ahead of addressing the United Nations General Assembly and returning to Kyiv. He pointed out that any elections held during a ceasefire would align well with the situation.
Zelenskyy responded affirmatively when asked whether a potential ceasefire agreement from President Putin could facilitate future elections in Ukraine. He reiterated his belief in pursuing peace over personal political ambitions.
“What if we end the war with Russia? Yes,” he said, clarifying that elections are not his main focus during this tumultuous period. His aim, he explained, is to support and stand by his country in its time of need.
The perspective comes as Zelenskyy continues to lead Ukraine under martial law, which has been in place since Russia’s full-scale invasion began in February 2022. This law prohibits elections, altering the political landscape significantly.
Zelenskyy, first elected in a landslide victory in 2019, would have completed his five-year term by May 2024 had the conflict not escalated. As it stands, he has now served over six years in office, extending beyond his initial mandate.
