Preseason Loss for Rangers with Bright Spots
The Rangers faced a tough 5-4 preseason defeat on Tuesday, but the promising performances from young players Brett Bellard, Gabe Perot, and Brennan Othmann stole the spotlight, despite the team blowing a 4-2 lead early in the third period.
This game featured a different lineup than the previous loss, where they had also struggled in the final period, giving up a 4-1 advantage. A strong presence from Hartford’s expected starting goaltender, Dylan Garand, might have made a difference.
“I think it played out in completely different manners,” said Coach Mike Sullivan. “But we can’t allow that to happen regularly. We need to manage the momentum better.”
Perot had a significant role on the top line alongside JT Miller and Mika Zibanejad. Othmann stepped in for Artemi Panarin, who was sidelined due to a lower-body issue, completing a line with Vincent Trocheck and Alexis Lafreniere.
Bellard played on the left side of the third line, flanked by Noaraba and Connor Cialee. He made a noteworthy play by charging the net to deflect a backhand shot and then set up Othmann for a power-play goal, helping the team lead 3-2 heading into the third period.
Sullivan expressed optimism about the group, saying, “We’re trying to get a feel for what we’ve got. I think they provided a peek into their capabilities.” He added, “That’s the essence of preseason, right?”
Interestingly, Sullivan highlighted Perot as “an exciting addition” and mentioned that Othmann “offered a glimpse of brilliance.” As it stands, the Rangers currently have 48 players on their roster. They will need to trim down significantly before their upcoming game on Long Island.
“We’re facing immediate choices and larger decisions,” Sullivan noted. “It’s all about discovering what we have.”
