Chedur Sanders Seeks Opportunities Beyond Third String in Cleveland
Chedur Sanders may currently be the third-string quarterback for the Browns, yet he is convinced that he has the skills to be a starter elsewhere.
Though Sanders hasn’t stepped onto the field during a regular season game yet, he believes he can outperform some of the starting quarterbacks in the NFL. “If you see quarterback play in the league now, I know I can do better than that,” he mentioned in a recent interview with ESPN Cleveland.
Initially, analysts anticipated that Sanders, a former star at Colorado, would be a top-five draft pick this year. However, he ended up being selected as the 144th pick overall in the fifth round.
During training camp, he faced off against three other contenders for the starting position, but the Browns opted for veteran Joe Flacco as their starter, leaving third-round pick Dorian Thompson-Robinson as the backup. They also traded Kenny Pickett to the Raiders over the offseason.
This leaves Sanders in a role as the third-string quarterback for the scout team.
“Overall, I feel like I’m doing great things and doing what I need to do every day. I’m focused on my full mission,” he explained. “I’m not really comfortable being a scout team player, but honestly, I’m going to make the most of my situation and enjoy my moments.”
There are whispers about the situation surrounding Sanders; he could potentially have been a second-string option elsewhere.
Reports suggest that the Ravens were interested in selecting him with the 141st pick, but his camp communicated that he wasn’t keen on serving as a backup to Lamar Jackson, as it wouldn’t provide him with a pathway to a starting role.
Recently, Dion Sanders shared that the Eagles also inquired about Chedur, presenting a similar scenario to Jalen Hurts, who is firmly established as the starter.
In Cleveland, however, Sanders sees a clearer opportunity alongside veteran Flacco and rookie Gabriel, though the team seems to favor Gabriel for the time being.
“I’m focusing on what I’ve done every day. Don’t let the depth chart dictate my mindset,” Sanders remarked this week. “It helps me avoid feeling trapped and ensures I stay focused on what really matters.”
Currently, the Browns hold a 1-2 record after surprising the Packers in Week 3, and they are staying optimistic as they prepare to face the Lions in Week 4.
While the season progresses, the team might turn to Gabriel and Sanders if the situation requires it, but Sanders remains focused on the present. “I’m ready to play now,” he stated, indicating his readiness for any opportunity that comes his way.
