Trump Comments on Comey’s Indictment

On Friday, President Donald Trump spoke with reporters, asserting that the indictment of former FBI director James Comey is focused on addressing years of corruption, rather than aiming for political revenge.

“It’s genuinely about justice, not vengeance,” Trump remarked while departing from the White House. “We can’t let this continue. These radical left individuals, they couldn’t escape it, and Comey was a part of that,” he added.

Trump characterized Comey as a “dirty cop,” stating, “He wasn’t the largest figure, but he was always involved in dirty dealings. Everyone had that impression.”

Comey’s Alleged False Statements

Trump’s remarks followed news that Comey has been indicted for allegedly lying to Congress and obstructing legislative procedures. He faces two charges: one for providing false testimony and another for obstructing congressional proceedings.

The president accused Comey of giving a strong yet false response while under oath, going so far as to say that he “lied.” Trump expressed disbelief that Comey thought he could avoid being caught. “It’s about justice. He lied. A lot,” Trump emphasized. “He provided me with a very specific answer, which I verified multiple times, and he got caught.”

Justice Department’s Case Against Comey

Comey’s indictment stems from a broader investigation into whether he misled Congress regarding the handling of the Trump-Russia investigation known as “Crossfire Hurricane.” He has publicly denied the allegations, claiming the charges are politically driven by the Justice Department under Trump.

In a video posted on Instagram following his indictment, Comey stated, “My family and I have been aware for years that standing up to Donald Trump comes with costs, but we couldn’t see ourselves living differently. We won’t bow down. You shouldn’t either. Someone I deeply care about has told me that fear is a tool of tyrants, and she is correct.” He continued, “But I’m not afraid.”

Upcoming Court Appearance

The indictment also accuses Comey of making a false statement regarding whether he permitted someone from the FBI to become an anonymous source. This assertion is claimed to be inaccurate in the indictment.

Comey’s arraignment is scheduled for October 9th at 10 am, before District Judge Michael S. Nachmanov, who was appointed by President Joe Biden.
