James Comey, the former FBI director, has declared his innocence following an indictment from the federal government that occurred on Thursday.
In a video shared on Instagram, Comey stated he feels “not afraid” and is prepared to face the trial.
“My family and I have recognized for quite some time that standing up to Donald Trump comes with its consequences, but we wouldn’t have it any other way. We can’t back down, and neither should you. I once said, ‘Fear is the tool of a tyrant,'” he expressed.
He added, “It pains me to see what’s happening to the Department of Justice, but I have strong faith in the federal justice system. I’m innocent, so I welcome the trial to defend my beliefs.”
According to reports, Comey is facing one charge of making false statements and another for obstructing justice.
This news highlights:
As reported, the charges stem from Comey’s testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee on September 30, 2020.
When questioned by Senator Ted Cruz, he reaffirmed in 2017 that he had not permitted leaks regarding the FBI’s investigation into Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton, which he stood by.
However, an inspector’s report from the Department of Justice noted that Comey’s aide, Andrew McCabe, had indicated permission for leaks to the press. Yet, this report also indicated that McCabe had made several misleading statements.
In July, an investigation was launched by the FBI concerning John Brennan, the former CIA Director, and Comey, focusing on their involvement in inquiries about a supposed conspiracy between Trump and Russia.
Following the indictment, Peter Navarro, a Senior White House adviser, claimed Comey acted as either a “mastermind or useful idiot” behind the alleged Russian conspiracy.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump claimed Comey lied, stating, “There’s no way he can explain how to get out of this.”
Trump continued:
“He is a dirty cop and has always been one, but he is starting off poorly with a judge appointed by Joe Biden. Despite that, he was without doubt in what he declared. He left no room for error in his major answer; he was caught off guard. James Comey is a life destroyer; he knew exactly what he was doing. This is a serious and widespread lie, and there will be consequences!”
In May, Comey sparked controversy with a social media post, dubbed “86 47,” which some interpreted as a violent threat towards Trump. Notably, he had also disabled comments for that post.
Trump has faced two failed assassination attempts while campaigning against Kamala Harris in 2024. Comey later indicated he regretted nothing about his post.
