Strong Start for Team Europe at Ryder Cup

Team Europe is certainly feeling confident after a solid performance in the opening session of the Ryder Cup, finishing with a 3-1 advantage over the U.S. team.

John Rahm from Spain expressed his enthusiasm about partnering with Tyrrell Hutton, saying, “This guy is a joy to partner with, and we’ve really connected. He can be quite dependable under pressure.” Rahm found the partnership effective after their win against Justin Thomas and Bryson DeChambeau. “I just have faith in him, and that’s how we managed to pull it off again,” he added.

Ludvig Aberg and Matt Fitzpatrick triumphed with a score of 5&3 against Scottie Scheffler and Russell Henley in the opening foursome. Similarly, Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood took down Collin Morikawa and Harris English, finishing 5&4 in their match.

“Having a partner like Tommy gives you that extra support. You can play freely, which is really important,” said McIlroy. He emphasized how their chemistry felt strong during the game in Rome. “It’s just reassuring knowing that if I miss a shot, he’s right there to back me up,” he noted.

Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay secured a point for the U.S. against Robert McIntyre and Viktor Hovland, winning by two up, but the overall results were in favor of the Europeans.

This marks a historic achievement for the European team, as it is the first time they’ve won their first three matches on the road in Ryder Cup history, securing three points in the opening session—something they haven’t done since 1973. They’ve consistently finished Friday morning with at least three points, holding a 7-1 record since 1991.

With strong bonds present among the players, it’s not surprising that nearly all (11 of 12) members of Team Europe, including Captain Luke Donald, are returning from their recent victory. The sole newcomer is Rasmus Højgaard, who stepped in for his twin brother Nikolai.

The team arrived in the U.S. well in advance to prepare for the challenge at Bethpage’s Black Course.

“This is the first time Europe has accomplished this,” said Team Europe Strategy Director Paul McGinley, reflecting on their fresh approach to the matches. “It’s a new strategy, and we’re approaching the competition differently this time,” he remarked.

Clearly, the new tactics appear to be effective, and the camaraderie among the team is already palpable.
