Challenging News for the Patriots
In a difficult turn of events for the New England Patriots, Mike Vrabel shared on Friday that Terrell Williams, the team’s first-year defensive coordinator, has been diagnosed with prostate cancer.
“It’s unfortunate, but Terrell has shared that he is dealing with this diagnosis and is currently undergoing treatment,” he told reporters. “His presence is incredibly important—both personally to us and to the team as a whole. We want to ensure everyone is aware of what he’s facing.”
Williams, who previously worked alongside Vrabel in Tennessee from 2018 to 2023, joined the Patriots staff this offseason. He missed OTAs and mini-camps due to a medical issue, although he was able to participate in training camp.
On August 4, he had to leave practice on a cart after suffering from dehydration. Then, on September 10, he stepped away from the team right before the Week 2 game against the Dolphins and the Week 3 matchup with the Steelers, during which Zach Cool took over defensive play calls.
“We’re managing things well in his absence,” Vrabel stated. “Zach did a solid job. Communication has improved, and overall, the organization hasn’t missed a beat.”
Vrabel emphasized that Williams remains in their thoughts. “Our thoughts and prayers are with him. We stay in touch, but this is a challenging time for him and his family, and we care deeply.”
