Tony Gonzalez shares strong views on Russell Wilson's NFL legacy

Russell Wilson’s NFL Future Uncertain After Bench Role with Giants

It’s hard to believe that a decade has passed since Russell Wilson led the Seattle Seahawks in back-to-back Super Bowl appearances. Fast forward to ten years after that, and Wilson left Seattle at the end of the 2021 season. He faced a rocky two years with the Denver Broncos and spent 2024 with the Pittsburgh Steelers. This season, he began a new chapter with the New York Giants, though his tenure has seen him benched after just three games.

Such a drastic shift in the career of a Super Bowl champion and ten-time Pro Bowler has sparked debate about his short-term future in the NFL and even his overall legacy. Football Hall of Famer Tony Gonzalez is among those pondering whether Wilson will someday don the iconic gold jacket.

During a Prime Video broadcast of a recent game between the Seahawks and the Arizona Cardinals, Gonzalez opened up about Wilson’s possible Hall of Fame status. “Honestly, I hope we do. If there’s anyone from the Hall of Fame who’s played ‘himself’ it’s Russell Wilson,” he stated. He acknowledged that since leaving Seattle, Wilson has had his ups and downs.

Gonzalez went on to highlight the struggles Wilson has faced with other NFL teams since departing from the Seahawks. “Right after he went to Denver, which came with a massive contract, things went sideways. His experience in Pittsburgh was also less than ideal,” he remarked.

Meanwhile, former Seahawks player Richard Sherman reflected on Wilson’s time during the successful “Legion of Boom” era, asserting, “I think we should evaluate his career based on that period.” He pointed to how Wilson hasn’t seen the same level of success since leaving Seattle, saying, “He was the quarterback who brought Seattle a championship. Now he has the opportunity to show that he’s a star on his own, but it hasn’t played out that way.”

Wilson, who was drafted in the third round in 2012, quickly established himself as a starting quarterback and evolved into a dynamic player known for his athleticism and improvisation. While the Giants have struggled this season—losing a three-week tail to the Kansas City Chiefs and barely falling to the Dallas Cowboys in week two—Wilson’s performances have raised eyebrows.

Despite not shining in two of his three appearances this season, Wilson remains optimistic about his abilities. “I know I’m a winner,” he asserted after losing his starting position. “Champions don’t choose when to lead; they do it whenever it’s needed.”

As the Giants prepare to make rookie quarterback Jackson Dart their starter on Sunday in East Rutherford, New Jersey, Wilson’s next move remains uncertain. The outlook, as of now, feels a bit murky.
