Broadcasting companies that own various ABC-related stations have announced that Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night show will return this Friday after a temporary pause. Kimmel faced backlash on September 15 when he claimed during a monologue that the allegations surrounding Kirk Assassin were part of the Pro Trump Magazine movement. This led to two media companies shutting down the show at ABC stations and then pulling it from broader broadcasts.
Nexstar Media Group released a statement on Friday, following Sinclair Broadcasting Group’s earlier recovery of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” The show will be aired on ABC-affiliated stations. The statement mentioned, “As a local broadcaster, Nexstar remains committed to protecting the First Amendment while providing factual and impartial news to the communities we serve.”
Nexstar is currently in discussions with the Walt Disney Company, the parent of ABC TV, to address concerns regarding Kimmel’s comments. They emphasized their role as a manager of public radio waves, separating themselves from cable networks and national streams, in their commitment to reflect the sensibilities of local communities. They explicitly stated that their decisions have been guided by these principles, regardless of external influences, such as government agencies.
When Disney confirmed the show’s return to ABC, Nexstar and Sinclair decided to continue the suspension at their stations. A spokesperson from Sinclair noted that they had received feedback from audiences and community leaders regarding the importance of responsible broadcasting, especially after recent violent incidents, including a shooting linked to an ABC affiliate station.
Upon his return to the airwaves, Kimmel didn’t hold back in criticizing President Donald Trump but also expressed a sense of compassion for Erica Kirk, who spoke publicly about forgiving her husband, Charlie Kirk’s alleged assailant.
