Brock Purdy likely to begin in a key boost for the 49ers in Week 4

The Block is Back

Brock Purdy, the quarterback for the 49ers, is set to resume his starting role this Sunday against the Jaguars at Levi’s Stadium, according to coach Kyle Shanahan’s comments to the media on Friday.

Purdy has been sidelined for the last two games due to a turf toe injury he suffered during the season opener against the Seahawks. However, he fully participated in practice on Friday and even encouraged Shanahan to confirm his return.

“He’s been practicing well all week,” Shanahan mentioned. “We expect him to be ready to go on Sunday.”

With Purdy back in the lineup, the 49ers aim to keep their undefeated streak alive, currently boasting a 3-0 record, which is, well, just ten points shy of perfection.

I mean, it’s exactly what we hoped for,” Shanahan said, adding that he felt optimistic about Purdy’s recovery. “We knew it could swing either way, but last week, we considered him for emergency duty. We were in touch with him on Monday and Tuesday.”

“As long as he felt good today, we were expecting this,” he added.

In Purdy’s absence, Mac Jones stepped in and secured victories against the Saints and Cardinals. Jones completed 53 of 80 passes for a total of 563 yards over those games, along with four touchdowns and just one interception, achieving a passer rating of 98.1.

Even with Jones’ impressive performance, it’s clear that Purdy, who secured a five-year, $265 million extension during the offseason, remains the long-term option for San Francisco.

In his season debut, Purdy went 26 of 35, throwing for two touchdowns and a couple of interceptions, resulting in a QBR of 78.8.

Shanahan reinforced that Purdy’s practice performance indicates he’s ready for game action, noting, “He’s always prepared.”
