The Secretary of the Commerce Bureau, Howard Lutnick, mentioned that President Trump likely won’t overlook the “negativity” associated with tech billionaire Elon Musk as he steps away from government. Lutnick referred to Musk as Trump’s “best friend” during his administration but noted that Musk’s departure left a lasting impression of negativity.
“I think Elon Musk really earned the president’s friendship and admiration,” Lutnick stated in an interview with host Bhatia Unger Sargon. “However, his departure brought to light some negative aspects, and I doubt the president will easily forget that.”
During Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign, Musk’s support was significant, reportedly contributing over $290 million to Trump and other Republican candidates, as indicated by a Federal Election Commission filing. Their collaboration led to Musk taking a leading role in the contentious Office of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
Yet, growing tensions within the administration regarding Musk’s position in DOGE strained their relationship. Musk resigned in May, shortly after speaking out against Trump’s proposed tax and spending policies, which he described as having a “massive hatred.”
The friendship appeared to sour further when Musk suggested Trump’s name was linked to the controversial Epstein Files.
Lutnick noted that Trump remained “friendly” towards Musk despite the issues. “He’s generous and good-natured because the president is genuinely good,” he added.
After stepping in as Commerce Secretary, Lutnick reflected on his long-standing relationship with Trump, which dates back over 50 years as fellow billionaires, and mentioned the complexities of his friendship with Musk.
The complete interview will be broadcast on News Nation’s “Batia” at 4 PM on Saturday.
