Richard Grenell Discloses Trump’s Strategy to Save the ‘Struggling Arts’

Kennedy Center’s Transformation Under Trump

Richard Grenell, the President of the Kennedy Center, has indicated that the recent success of this iconic cultural venue in Washington, D.C., aligns with President Donald Trump’s “common sense” efforts.

During an interview with the Daily Call News Foundation, Grenell highlighted that under Trump’s leadership, the Center aims to be a welcoming space for everyone, regardless of political affiliation. Trump acquired the renowned venue in February, terminating board members who were appointed by then-President Joe Biden and bringing in a new board of directors. This move attracted criticism from some on the left and various media outlets.

Grenell was appointed as the interim executive director after the acquisition. He previously held positions as the acting director of national intelligence and U.S. ambassador to Germany during Trump’s first term.

“I really want everyone to feel welcome at the Kennedy Center, no matter who you voted for. It’s a place for all,” Grenell shared. “Since I took on this role, we haven’t canceled a single show. We just ask that if a production can’t sell enough tickets, we might struggle to find a sponsor to cover those costs.”

He referenced a recent New York Times article discussing the struggles of Broadway, which he labeled as “a very important story.” According to him, the resilience of Broadway is at risk, with productions failing to draw crowds and losing significant amounts of money.

Interestingly, out of the 18 musical productions slated to open on Broadway in the 2024-25 season, none are projected to be profitable. Furthermore, reports indicate that three new musicals, each with hefty budgets, closed shortly after opening.

Grenell noted Trump’s keen interest in revitalizing the arts, stating that the president is committed to engaging audiences once again. “We’re completely sold out through *Les Misérables*, and we consistently see great attendance for *The Sound of Music*,” he mentioned.

*Les Misérables*, based on Victor Hugo’s famous novel, was featured at the Kennedy Center from June 11 to July 13, 2025. The production, led by Tony Award winner Jack O’Brien, marks the beginning of a new North American tour, with its last performance at the Center scheduled for October 5, 2025.

In the months following Trump’s acquisition, changes at the Center shifted towards a more commercially-driven model that focuses on visitor preferences rather than political agendas. The Vice President of PR, Roma Daravi, emphasized the importance of “programming that resonates with the public, including more recognizable favorites.”

In May, not long after Trump’s acquisition, the Kennedy Center announced a strategic shift away from an earlier policy that restricted productions to unionized works. This earlier approach had limited the Center’s competitiveness with other local theaters.

Grenell concluded by stating his vision: “Under my direction, we aim to restore the Kennedy Center to its former glory in Washington, D.C.” In a February post on social media, he remarked that the Center should mirror the finest talent from across the nation, criticizing past productions that targeted youth in ways he deemed inappropriate.
