Protests against ICE in Portland lead Trump to declare troop deployment

Trump’s Troop Deployment to Portland Amid Protests

On Saturday morning, President Donald Trump revealed plans to deploy troops to Portland, Oregon, in response to ongoing protests against ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) in the city.

“At the request of Homeland Security Secretary Christie Noem, I’m directing War Secretary Pete Hegses to send all necessary troops to ensure the safety of Portland,” he stated. “I’ve given full support if it comes to that. Thank you for keeping this in mind!”

Meanwhile, the mayor of Portland urged the city to tackle its homelessness issue before any drastic measures—like “deploying bulldozers”—are taken.

The protests in Portland have escalated since June. City officials have issued land use violation notices to the ICE facility, questioning the duration detainees can be held. There have also been reports of anti-ICE graffiti defacing the facility’s exterior. At various points, clashes have erupted between protesters and federal agents, leading to the use of rubber bullets, tear gas, and flashbangs.

Augmented protests have turned violent, with some demonstrators displaying guillotines and clashing with law enforcement, who responded with crowd-dispersing munitions.

Portland has been a sanctuary city since 2017, which means it largely resists federal immigration enforcement. This status has made it a focal point amid ongoing tensions surrounding immigration policies—especially when troops were sent to other cities like Los Angeles during similar protests.

“This notice informs you that your area is recognized as having sanctuary policies that hinder federal immigration enforcement,” a notification stated, highlighting ongoing tensions.

In response, Portland City Attorney Robert Taylor emphasized that the city is following state laws, claiming compliance where necessary.

Fox News Digital has reached out to the offices of Oregon Governor Tinakotec and others for further comment.
