Pete Alonso leads the way for the Mets with an important comeback performance

Alonso Shines in Crucial Game Against Marlins

MIAMI — After a challenging game on Friday, where Pete Alonso struggled and missed opportunities contributed to the Marlins’ scoring, he bounced back spectacularly on Saturday.

In what would be his final regular season game with the Mets, Alonso played a pivotal role, especially as the team gears up for postseason implications against Eury Pérez’s fastball.

In Game 161 at LoanDepot Park, Alonso led the Mets to a 5-0 victory over the Marlins, ensuring that Game 162 carries significant weight.

“Pete sets the tone early on,” coach Carlos Mendoza remarked, acknowledging the necessity of the win. He noted, “It was crucial for the Mets to step up against Perez.”

Although the Mets didn’t dominate, they executed well enough to keep their playoff hopes alive.

The action started right from the first inning when Francisco Lindor reached second on a walk and a wild pitch.

In a season riddled with missed opportunities, Alonso’s impressive 99.1 mph four-seamer hit a double deep into left-center, giving the Mets an early lead that they wouldn’t relinquish.

“I felt like I had a good batting day, and hopefully, I can carry this over tomorrow,” Alonso said, who was particularly effective in his second at-bat.

Against Pérez, the Mets managed just three hits, with two being Alonso’s. When he was behind 1-2 in the fourth inning, he worked the count, showing his determination.

“He tried to sneak one past me,” Alonso said. “I was ready for that,” as he recalled connecting with a blistering 100.6 mph fastball, sending it soaring into left.

Interestingly, Alonso hadn’t previously faced a fastball clocking in at triple digits, although he’s hit a few approaching that mark. “Would they cut them off?” he joked about the near-100s earlier in the game.

Notably, he recorded his third and final at-bat in the innings, driving in two runs and securing the game with Jeff McNeil’s double providing extra insurance.

As the Mets’ looming free agent first baseman gears up for Game 162, Alonso is ready, regardless of whether it leads to postseason play.

“This is an exciting baseball game,” he concluded, reflecting on the significance of the moment.
