The Mets seem to have hit a pivotal moment, with a promising new addition playing a key role.
After a difficult stretch, marked by four series losses and no wins of their own, they finally found their rhythm in the 14th series. On Thursday, they demonstrated their offensive strength for the second time in three days, following the call-up of rookie AJ Ewing from Triple-A Syracuse. They wrapped up a three-game winning streak against the Tigers with a solid 9-4 victory at Citi Field.
Ewing celebrated his first major league home run among a flurry of hits, helping the Mets carry positive momentum into this weekend’s Subway Series. Alongside Ewing, Brett Batty, Mark Vientos, Juan Soto, and Marcus Semien all contributed to a team-high five home runs in the game.
In his debut series, the 21-year-old outfielder made quite the impression. He got on base four times during Tuesday’s game, scored the game-winner in the 10th inning, and then cranked his first home run in the third inning on Thursday.
Maybe, just maybe, the Mets (18-25) have found the spark they need to turn their season around. If they can secure at least two wins against the Yankees this weekend, it might really help that theory.
Nolan McLean, after a shaky first inning, settled in and pitched through the seventh. The rookie right-handed pitcher allowed six hits, three walks, and struck out seven, with three earned runs against him.
Taking a hit early, McLean conceded a three-run homer to Gage Workman, digging the Mets into a deficit. He did hit his fourth home run of the season, showcasing some bright spots despite the early struggles.
In the third inning, Ewing initiated a comeback against Kaider Montero by launching a home run over the right field fence.
Batty hit a two-run homer in the fourth to even the score at 3-3, following a two-out walk from MJ Melendez.
Later, Soto put the Mets ahead with an RBI single in the fifth inning, energized by Carson Benge’s single and steal. Vientos then hit a two-run homer, pushing the Mets’ lead to 6-3, marking his fourth homer in just ten games.
In the sixth, Hayden Senger executed a successful safety squeeze bunt, extending the lead to 7-3. Both Soto and Semien added to the scoreline with home runs, emphasizing the Mets’ offensive resurgence.
