Rutgers fails to secure first Big Ten victory following tough defeat to Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS – Minnesota Tops Rutgers in Close Match

Drake Lindsay had an impressive performance on Saturday, passing for 324 yards and three touchdowns, as Minnesota overcame Rutgers with a score of 31-28.

Despite being down two starting running backs, the Golden Gophers (3-1, 1-0 in the Big Ten) struggled to establish their rushing game early on, gaining just 35 yards. However, freshman quarterback Lindsay displayed his skills by completing 31 of 41 passes, including 23 in the second half. His short passing strategy allowed Minnesota to control the game clock and recover from an early 14-0 deficit.

“They said they were putting it in my hands to win the game,” Lindsay reflected on his halftime discussion with the coaching staff. “That really boosted the offense’s confidence and mine too. We did it.”

Rutgers quarterback Atan Kaliakmanis, who spent three years with the Gophers and started for them in 2023, threw for 249 yards and two touchdowns during the game.

Antwine Raymond had a standout performance for the Scarlet Knights (3-2, 0-2), racking up a career-high 161 yards and two touchdowns.

“We’re struggling to execute consistently as a team,” Rutgers coach Greg Ciano noted. “In my experience, consistency comes last. We have to keep pushing, but I believe it will come.”

The Gophers trailed 28-24 when they regained possession with 6:24 left in the game. Lindsay completed six passes for 72 yards, then connected with Javon Tracy for a 4-yard touchdown that put Minnesota ahead.

Rutgers then advanced to Minnesota’s 26-yard line, but a missed opportunity cost them 15 yards, complicating their field goal attempt for Dane Pizza, who had to try from 56 yards.

Crucial Errors

In the final drive, Rutgers took over at their own 25 with 3:19 remaining. Kaliakmanis effectively moved the team into field goal range, completing four out of five passes. However, on second and ten at Minnesota’s 26, an unexpected shotgun snap led to a fumble that was recovered by Minnesota past the 40-yard line.

“Honestly, it was a misunderstanding,” Kaliakmanis admitted about the play. “I have to improve.”

Rushing Insights

Before this game, Minnesota had allowed only 124 rushing yards across their first three games. Interestingly, Raymond surpassed that figure on his own in the fourth quarter, with Rutgers finishing the game with 138 rushing yards.

“We expect to run well every week,” Raymond said. He noted the significance of his two touchdowns in the previous four games.

Looking Ahead

Minnesota was determined not to start their Big Ten schedule with a home loss, especially before facing top-ranked Ohio State next week. Meanwhile, Rutgers has found themselves in tough positions, leading in the fourth quarter of both their recent Big Ten losses.

The next matchups feature Minnesota against Ohio on October 4th and Rutgers competing against Washington on October 10th.
