Tony Adams’ Injury Update and Malachi Moore’s Performance

Tony Adams is back on the field following a hip injury that kept him out of the Jets’ recent loss to the Buccaneers. However, his return doesn’t necessarily mean rookie Malachi Moore will head back to the bench anytime soon.

It’s still somewhat unclear if Moore will retain his starting position at safety or if Adams will come in to take his place. Coach Aaron Glenn did mention that the fourth overall pick from Alabama is expected to play a significant role against the Dolphins on Monday night.

In his last game, which was in Adams’ absence, Moore recorded four tackles. “He did a pretty good job,” Glenn remarked. “Of course, there’s always room for improvement; being a rookie, he’s made some rookie mistakes, but overall, I think he’s going to be a solid player for us.” It’s a realistic perspective, one that acknowledges both the talent and the growing pains of a newcomer.

Glenn seems to think the defense is on the upswing, which is encouraging. So far, through three games, the Jets’ defense ranks ninth in the league in terms of opposing third-down conversion rates at 35.14%, and they’re eleventh in red zone efficiency for opposing teams at 50.0%. That’s not bad, right?

Expressing his thoughts on the defense, Glenn said, “There’s a lot to be encouraged about how we’ve been playing. Even when we gave up 34, 30, and 22 points in previous games, there’s still a sense of improvement.” It’s a mixed bag of results, but perhaps that inconsistency is part of their growth.

On a different note, edge rusher Jermaine Johnson and cornerback Jervis Brownlee Jr., who just joined the team in a trade with the Titans, have been ruled out due to ankle injuries. They were sidelined on Saturday. Kene Nwangwu, the kick returner and running back, remains doubtful as well; he didn’t practice on Saturday after limited participation earlier in the week.

In other news, former Giants tight end Darren Waller is set to make his debut for the Dolphins on Monday. He missed the first three games of this season with a hip injury but is now ready to get back in action. Waller, who is 33, had taken a year off after retiring before the 2024 season.
