Special education teacher and former clown collapses in court just before sentencing for wife's murder

A former special education teacher in Texas was accused of fatally shooting his wife. Tragically, his wife had overcome substance abuse issues only to die in court moments before her own sentencing for murder.

James Paul Anderson, 39, experienced a severe medical emergency shortly after he arrived at the Criminal Justice Center in Houston. He was facing a potential 35-year prison sentence for the death of his wife, 34-year-old Victoria Anderson. According to the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, this was set to happen in 2023.

Authorities indicated that preliminary reports suggested Anderson had taken drugs while waiting for his court proceedings. Harris County District Officer Alan Rosen shared that Anderson was rushed to the hospital via ambulance.

Officials attempted to administer naloxone, an emergency medication for opioid overdoses, but he tragically passed away at 11:05 AM before reaching the hospital.

During the investigation into the incident, a lawyer for Anderson reportedly discovered a brown bag in a nearby trash can containing a clear substance believed to be methamphetamine.

The judge closed the courtroom promptly, marking it as a possible crime scene.

Witnesses described how Anderson, known previously as Mr. Jazz, had a brief conversation with his defense attorney upon arrival at the court. He then reportedly requested some time alone before discarding something into the trash can, shortly before he began to vomit.

Currently, an autopsy is being conducted to ascertain the exact cause of death.

Victoria Anderson was shot in their Kingwood home in September 2023. James Anderson had been taken into custody after a standoff with law enforcement, which lasted several hours. The police were alerted to a shooting by an emergency dispatcher, who heard gunfire.

James surrendered around five hours later after leaving their 3-year-old son alone when authorities arrived, effectively barricading himself with his wife’s body. Prior police reports indicated there had been domestic issues, and Victoria had reportedly filed for divorce about a month before her tragic death.
