Malcolm Brogdon mentioned that while there are several options available for free agency, he hasn’t signed a guaranteed deal this offseason.
Even with uncertainties, Brogdon indicated that moving to the Knicks felt straightforward after a challenging previous season with Washington.
“Entering my 10th year, I’m aiming for a championship and wanting to be part of a strong organization,” Brogdon said following practice on Sunday. “I experienced that in Milwaukee and Boston, and there’s a real opportunity here.”
A key factor for this is the expectation that players will step up, particularly since the Knicks reached the Eastern Conference Finals last season with Jalen Brunson leading the way.
“What Jalen brings to the table is crucial for our future as a team,” Brogdon remarked.
Brogdon joined the Knicks after a season where he played only 24 games with the Wizards, struggling to make a mark with a career-low 29% from beyond the arc.
He also had a tough time with Portland, appearing in just 39 games after a season with the Celtics. Now, as he approaches his 33rd birthday in December, there’s hope he can regain his past performance.
“I’ve encountered three different systems, play styles, and coaches over the last three years,” Brogdon reflected. “I think that helps me adjust quickly compared to others who are new here. It’s all about who can adapt in this league.”
Knicks coach Mike Brown praised Brogdon’s experience, calling him a stabilizing force as they implement new strategies.
“He’s smooth in every way, especially as we introduce a lot of new concepts to the group,” Brown said. “His veteran presence is notable, having navigated various situations.”
Despite the lack of guaranteed contracts, Brogdon appears confident about his place on the team as training camp progresses.
“I’m coming here with hopes of contributing to the team’s success,” he stated. “The decision isn’t entirely in my hands, but I know I can help this team.”
Reportedly, Brogdon’s arrival, along with others, has put the Knicks in a challenging salary cap situation.
He mentioned on Sunday that he plans to have in-depth discussions with the Knicks before finalizing any decisions.
“I genuinely wanted to be here with the Knicks,” Brogdon expressed. “It’s an honor to wear this jersey and compete with this team, especially considering their current trajectory. I had no desire to go elsewhere.”
He has faith that his versatile skill set will earn him a spot on the roster.
“This team has sought players who can handle the ball and create opportunities,” Brogdon explained. “I bring a unique set of skills and strengths.”
Currently, he is competing alongside Brunson in camp and is eager to collaborate with him once the season kicks off.
“He’s an exceptional player, a superstar in this league,” Brogdon noted.
The Knicks departed for Abu Dhabi on Sunday afternoon, and Brown shared that he has a plan in place to manage the players’ schedule ahead of their first two preseason games against the 76ers.
“We’re trying to avoid any drowsiness after a long flight,” Brown commented after practice.
The team is expected to arrive in Abu Dhabi around 3 PM, with a time difference of eight hours from New York, and they have light practice sessions scheduled.
“We want to ensure they stay active,” Brown said.
With prior experience traveling to China with NBA teams, including the Cavaliers and Warriors, Brown is mindful of the challenges that come with these international trips.
