Tragic Incident at Michigan Worship Center

Residents of a Michigan community are mourning after a man crashed a pickup truck into a local church during Sunday service, which led to a fire. Authorities report that 40-year-old Thomas Jacob Sanford from Burton drove his Chevrolet Silverado into the Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints worship center in Grand Blanc. After exiting the vehicle, he opened fire with a semi-automatic weapon. The two cities are roughly 10 miles apart.

Police Chief William Lenay of Grand Blanc noted that the church was filled with hundreds of worshippers at the time of the incident, and investigators are currently searching for a motive.

Of the eight people injured, seven are reported to be stable, while one remains in critical condition. Unfortunately, two parishioners lost their lives in the incident, which occurred around 10:25 AM local time. Lenay remarked, “We believe there was a fire that occurred and that it was intentionally set by the suspect,” suggesting that further casualties could emerge from within the church.

Grand Blanc, home to about 7,900 residents, is located an hour northwest of Detroit. Scripps News Service spoke with a parishioner identified only as “Paula,” who recounted the chaotic scene. “We went to church. We were sitting… One of our counselors was talking, and then we heard a loud bang. The door was blown off, and everyone rushed out. We ran through the church and into the parking lot,” she explained.

Paula sought refuge at a relative’s house nearby. Reflecting on the day, she stated, “We worshiped the Savior, Jesus Christ. And this happens, but it doesn’t shake my faith.” She was uncertain if the shooter had any connections to the church and mentioned that she had been a member for 38 years.

“I lost friends there and some kids I teach on Sundays were in there,” she added.
