New York (AP) – About £58 million worth of corndogs and similar sausage-on-a-stick products are being recalled across the U.S. after several consumers reported injuries, stating that pieces of wood might be embedded in the items.
The recall, announced by the Agriculture Department’s Food Safety Inspection Service, pertains to Hillshire brand’s “State Fair Corn Dog on Stick” and “Jimmy Dean Pancakes & Sausage” products. Hillshire, based in Texas, is a subsidiary of Tyson Foods.
Issues were identified following multiple consumer complaints. Tyson noted that it was found a “limited number” of these products contained “wooden sticks inside the batter.” This determination led to the recall.
The affected corn dog and sausage-on-a-stick products were produced between March 17 and the previous Friday. Tyson has stated that the issue was contained to one facility located in Haltom, Texas.
The Food Safety Inspection Service fears that these recalled items may still be in the refrigerators and freezers of consumers across the country, as well as in schools and other institutions. These products were sold not only online and in retail stores but also to school districts and Department of Defense facilities, the agency reported.
Consumers who purchased “State Fair Cone Dog on the Stick” and “Jimmy Dean Pancake & Sausage Sticks” are advised to either discard them or return them to the place of purchase.
To find out which specific corndogs and sausage products are involved in this recall, customers should check the product name, use-by date, and other identifying details available online through FSIS and Tyson. The recalled items must also carry the identification numbers “EST-582” or “P-894” on the packaging.
It remains uncertain if consumers who bought these products will be able to receive a refund. The Associated Press reached out to the Hillshire brand and Tyson for further information on this matter.
Contamination from foreign materials, such as wood, is a common reason for food recalls in the U.S., alongside other contaminants like plastics and metal fragments.
