Samantha Ponder’s Remarks on Transgender Athletes in Sports
Former ESPN host Samantha Ponder expressed her views on the increasing presence of transgender athletes in women’s sports during an appearance on Fox News’ “American Saturday.” She discussed this sensitive topic in a conversation with Kayleigh McEnany, highlighting the ongoing debates surrounding it, especially after Leah Thomas’ NCAA victory in 2022 as well as new requirements for compliance with Title IX in U.S. schools.
Ponder mentioned, “In this country, particularly in sports, stating that ‘I don’t think men should participate in women’s sports’ shouldn’t cause backlash.” She noted the frustration many professional athletes feel about being unable to express such sentiments openly, emphasizing the overwhelming agreement among them that this situation is absurd.
She added, “It’s crazy that we can’t say this truthfully and kindly. It’s about honesty, not being rude. I mean, who wants a man in their daughter’s locker room?”
The debate over transgender participation in girls’ and women’s sports has continued to be prominent since 2025, particularly after President Trump issued an executive order that prompted discussions about men competing in women’s sports. This topic remains contentious, exemplified by high school sports in California, where the participation of trans athletes, especially in sports like volleyball, stirs considerable discussion.
Although the NCAA revised its gender participation rules following Trump’s orders, some women’s sports advocates argue that the necessary progress is still lacking.
