Trump Reveals Full Tariff on Imported Movies

Trump Proposes 100% Tariffs on Foreign Films

On Monday, President Donald Trump declared that a 100% tariff will be imposed on films made outside the United States. He made this announcement via his social media platform, suggesting that the U.S. film industry is falling behind its global competitors. Earlier this month, he had floated the idea of such tariffs, prompting federal agencies to evaluate the proposal.

“Our filmmaking industry has been taken away from the U.S. by other countries, much like taking candy from babies,” Trump stated. He specifically criticized California’s governance, declaring, “To address this ongoing issue, I’m implementing a 100% tariff on every foreign film.” It’s a bold move, but, perhaps, a bit controversial.

Recent data indicates that spending on U.S. film and television productions with budgets exceeding $40 million has decreased since 2022. This drop raises concerns about the state of the industry.

In response, California’s Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom criticized the announcement, indicating it will cause “irreparable damage” to the U.S. film sector and labeling it “100% stupid.”

This latest tariff move comes shortly after Trump mentioned similar 100% tariffs on imported medications unless companies establish manufacturing in the U.S. He also announced tariffs of 25% on heavy trucks and 30% on kitchen cabinets and related furniture.

These tariffs are part of a broader investigation by the Department of Commerce under the Trade Expansion Act, but it’s still unclear what legal basis will be used for the film tariffs.

Additionally, in early September, the U.S. Federal Circuit Court of Appeals determined that the administration overstepped its authority with tariffs linked to the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. These tariffs will remain effective until October 14, allowing time for an appeal to the Supreme Court.

The White House has yet to respond to inquiries regarding these recent announcements.
