Minnesota Governor Tim Waltz (D) has put forward a proposal to ban the “selling and possessing state assault rifles” through constitutional amendments, following a lack of progress on a similar measure in Congress.
On Saturday, Governor Tim Waltz introduced a new approach to address gun violence, according to reports. He stated, “The majority of Congress demands a ‘yes’ vote on a ban, and then the majority of voters can approve the amendment.”
Breitbart News noted that Walz advocated for an “assault weapons” ban after a shooting incident at Catholic schools on August 27, 2025. He expressed that it was “unacceptable” for Congressional Republicans to oppose gun bans.
Waltz attempted to rally Republican lawmakers, urging them to at least conduct a “floor vote” on the Guns Prohibition Act. However, his push for gun control has struggled to gain momentum, leading him to consider constitutional reform as an alternative to Congressional action.
“The state will vote for the voters because they know this is a popular issue,” Waltz remarked to reporters during the Minpost Festival in downtown Minneapolis.
Waltz didn’t address the three types of firearms involved in the August 27 incident: a rifle, shotgun, and handgun. It raises the question—can banning one of these weapons truly prevent future attacks?
Moreover, although California has had a ban on “assault weapons” since the late 1980s, the state has also seen a rise in “active shooter incidents,” leading the nation in such events in 2021 and 2023.
