"Ireland is ruled by traitors": Steelers QB and disabled senior robbed in Dublin during NFL trip

Steelers Quarterback Targeted in Dublin Mugging

Before playing his first game in Ireland, a Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback was reportedly mugged in Dublin. The incident occurred just ahead of the Steelers’ matchup against the Minnesota Vikings at Croke Park early Sunday morning. The game, which the Steelers won 24-21, was overshadowed by the unfortunate events that unfolded in the city.

The attack took place not far from the stadium, specifically in the Temple Bar area. Reports indicate that several men were involved in stealing the quarterback’s phone late Friday night. Skylar Thompson, a 6’2″, 219-pound veteran currently on injured reserve, was said to have been harmed in the altercation. He sustained minor injuries and was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Police in Ireland confirmed they encountered a man needing medical help in the early hours of Saturday but provided no details about formal complaints surrounding the quarterback’s incident.

To add to the disturbing news, an elderly man with disabilities was also robbed later on Sunday night. This suggests the presence of criminal activity remained high in the area even after the game concluded.

According to local reports, the elderly man named Gregory was celebrating the Steelers’ victory when he was targeted. Stopping on the street to smoke a cigar, he found himself the victim of a phone theft, allegedly committed by a woman who approached him. Thankfully, nearby pedestrians alerted the police, who quickly apprehended the suspect and were able to return Gregory’s stolen phone.

Gregory’s mugging reportedly took place on O’Connell Street, even closer to the stadium than the earlier incident with Thompson. These areas are notorious for crimes, especially targeting tourists and foreigners, often in the form of pickpocketing and robbery.

Former UFC champion Conor McGregor weighed in on the situation, expressing his outrage on social media by stating, “Ireland is run by traitors!” He called for immediate action against the current governmental structure.

The police confirmed that no formal complaints had been lodged regarding Thompson’s altercation, though NFL reporter Tom Pelissero indicated the Steelers organization appeared to acknowledge the incident. In a statement, a Steelers spokesman mentioned they are coordinating with NFL Security to collect additional information.

It’s a perplexing situation, really. On one hand, football fans want to enjoy the game and the vibrant culture that comes with visiting a city like Dublin. On the other hand, incidents like these cast a long shadow over what should be a celebratory atmosphere.
