White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt remarked on Monday that Democrats have “just good reasons” to block government funding by refusing to support clean continuing resolutions (CRs) during her appearance on Fox News.
“Let’s be clear about the President’s stance and that of the White House. We are simply seeking a common-sense, clean funding solution—a continuing resolution to keep the government operational,” Leavitt stated. She noted that the proposed bill was merely intended to align funding with inflation at current levels.
She emphasized that “there’s really no valid reason for Democrats to reject this,” especially since they had previously supported a similar measure back in March, framing this opposition as lacking in rationality.
“The President is giving Democratic leaders one last opportunity to discuss this at the White House today. Now is not the moment for political maneuvering against Donald Trump,” she added.
Leavitt pointed out that government shutdowns impact the most vulnerable members of society, highlighting why Republicans and the President are eager to keep the government running.
Representative Dusty Johnson (R-SD) echoed these sentiments, suggesting that Democrats are looking to extend pandemic-era benefits unnecessarily. “They want to carry on the Covid-era enhanced premium tax credits, helping those earning at 400%, 500%, and 600%,” he commented.
Johnson further expressed concerns regarding the already significant tax credits provided under Obamacare during the pandemic, stating, “These provisions remain intact, regardless of the current debate.” He cautioned that if Congress doesn’t take action, these additional Covid-related tax credits will cease at the year’s end, deeming the situation as “insanity.”
He also criticized the prospect of a government shutdown as being entirely “manufactured by Chuck Schumer.”
