Michigan Shooting Investigation Ongoing
On Monday afternoon, Michigan authorities stated that the search for the motive behind the recent shooting at a Mormon chapel is still in progress.
The incident occurred on Sunday morning at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc Township.
The shooter has been identified as 40-year-old Thomas Jacob Sanford, who reportedly drove to the church, opened fire with an assault rifle, and then set the building ablaze.
Authorities confirmed that Sanford was fatally shot by law enforcement in the chapel’s parking lot just eight minutes after the first 911 call, according to Police Chief William Lenay.
FBI Special Agent Reuben Coleman mentioned that the investigation is treating the event as a targeted act of violence, with tips coming in from the public.
Chris Johns, a local city council candidate, shared that he had spoken to Sanford just a week prior, during which Sanford labeled Mormons as “antichrist.” However, Coleman emphasized that the motive is not yet clear and they have already interviewed over 100 witnesses and victims since the tragic event.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) is also involved in the investigation. ATF Special Agent James Deir noted that their national response team was on site Sunday night to assist with the inquiry.
At the beginning of the press conference, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer remarked that speculation about the incident is “useless” and “dangerous.” She urged people to “lower the temperature of rhetoric” and to cherish their loved ones while bringing the community together.
Authorities reported that two of the deceased suffered gunshot wounds, while the other two died from smoke inhalation. Medical Director Michael Dank from Henry Ford Genesis Hospital indicated that the patients treated ranged in age from six to 78 years old.
Among the injured, five were shot; one unfortunately passed away in the emergency department while two remained in critical condition. The other three had smoke inhalation issues, and two were discharged from the hospital.
