Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), known for her moderate stance, expressed concerns about the independence of the Department of Justice on Monday. She highlighted what she saw as “political pressure from the White House,” which preceded the indictment of former FBI Director James Comey.
“The Department of Justice has historically operated separately from the presidential administration to maintain public trust in the legal system,” Murkowski mentioned in a post on Social Platform X.
She went on to say that when overt political pressure from the White House results in significant personnel changes and criminal charges soon after a presidential call, it raises questions about the agency’s independence.
Murkowski, who has been critical of President Trump in the past, emphasized that the case involving Comey must remain free of political influence to safeguard American democracy.
“Like any American, former FBI Director James Comey deserves a presumption of innocence and a fair trial,” she noted. “As the legal process unfolds, I hope the DOJ will adhere to constitutional and federal laws, showing that this case is free from political interference.”
“The foundation of our democracy relies on the public’s faith in equal justice under the law. If Americans start to believe that federal prosecutions are motivated by political agendas rather than factual evidence, it will be hard to repair that damage,” Murkowski added.
A Federal Jury filed charges on Thursday, accusing Comey of making false statements related to Congressional lawsuits stemming from his 2020 Senate testimony.
Trump has persistently called for charges against Comey, who denies any wrongdoing linked to the investigation into the 2016 campaign’s ties to Russia.
On Friday, Trump stated that he had previously warned that Democrats were “weaponizing the Justice Department like no one in history” and expressed the hope that “other individuals” could also face charges.
These charges emerged after Trump appeared to have directly pressured his Attorney General to investigate Comey, along with Senator Adam Schiff (D-Calif) and New York Attorney General Leticia James.
The indictment followed Trump’s dismissal of Eric Sheebert, a U.S. attorney who refused to pursue charges against James. Sheebert had also investigated Comey but did not bring any charges, reportedly encountering difficulties during the investigation.
