Case of Anthony Labrador Sierra Raises Questions in Ohio Town

In Perrysburg, Ohio, residents viewed Anthony Emmanuel Labrador Sierra as a 16-year-old victim of human trafficking. However, there was a significant twist: he was actually 24 and had recently welcomed a baby with his ex-fiancée in Toledo. His elaborate deception had been in place for over a year until authorities discovered discrepancies in his birth certificate.

The situation escalated when Evelyn Camacho, the mother of Labrador Sierra’s child, called the home where he lived. “I was questioning what the truth was,” she shared. “Did he lie to me about being an adult? Or did he lie to others about being a child? I just didn’t know, and I care about him. He’s my daughter’s father.”

Afterward, his new guardians, Cathy and Brad Mephard, decided to investigate further. They contacted the school and the police, leading to the discovery of troubling items in his room, including a burner phone, a fake ID, and a semi-automatic firearm, as noted in an arrest affidavit.

Labrador Sierra ultimately pleaded guilty to charges related to purchasing a firearm while misrepresenting his immigration status and has been placed in custody, potentially facing decades in prison.

“Why he did that? That’s a great question,” reflected Camacho. “Maybe he’s the only one who really knows, and perhaps even he, to be honest, is a bit impulsive.”

This incident has shaken the small community of 25,000, prompting many to ponder how someone could deceive local authorities for so long. A concerned parent familiar with Labrador Sierra stated, “People were certainly shocked. We live in a somewhat conservative area. There were questions like ‘How did he pass?’”

The Perrysburg school district issued a statement affirming that they followed federal regulations in their enrollment procedures for unaccompanied minors, which allowed them to register without typical documentation. They did obtain a birth certificate, but it’s unclear where it was issued from.

Labrador Sierra’s saga began on November 1, 2023, when he reached out to the school to confirm his enrollment, presenting himself as a homeless Venezuelan immigrant and a victim of trafficking who wanted to become a student. He provided a birth certificate claiming he was born on December 2, 2007, but the legitimacy of this document remains uncertain.

Moving in with the Mephards—a couple with four children—on March 24, he eventually secured permanent guardianship in November 2024. Beyond his role as a student, Labrador Sierra’s presence stood out; attributes such as his tattoo and physical maturity raised eyebrows among some residents. A local parent recalled, “He was very charismatic and lovely, but looking back, he had a different build compared to other teenagers.”

Ohio State Representative Haraz N. Gambari expressed concerns about the school’s vetting processes. He emphasized, “Customs and Border Patrol should have been involved in assessing his legitimacy and taking biometrics. This might have flagged his true age immediately.”

While Camacho maintained contact with Labrador Sierra, she never imagined he would be taken into custody. “What really upsets me is that I was struggling to raise my daughter, while he experienced a carefree teenage life, seemingly without responsibility.”
