Numerous federal agents focus on the Tren de Aragua gang in a Chicago operation

Federal Immigration Operation in Chicago

On Tuesday, a significant immigration enforcement operation took place in Chicago, involving hundreds of federal agents aiming at individuals connected with the Tren de Aragua gang. This unique operation, confirmed by the FBI, saw agents supporting the U.S. Border Patrol in the South Shore area of the city. Reports suggest that nearly 300 agents were involved, targeting six individuals associated with this Venezuelan gang.

This development closely followed an announcement from Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, where he revealed that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is looking to deploy 100 troops in Illinois.

As of Tuesday, neither the FBI, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), nor DHS had responded to media inquiries regarding this operation.

A witness described the scene, noting the sounds of screaming and loud bangs as agents moved in on a specific apartment building. Eyewitness accounts circulated online, with some mentioning that twenty people were taken into custody during the operation.

Interestingly, Chicago police were not involved in the operation. There were also reports of protesters clashing with federal agents, with some demonstrators allegedly being met with tear gas and pepper balls.

In a press conference, Governor Pritzker raised concerns about federal actions. He mentioned receiving numerous reports over the weekend indicating potential abuse of power by ICE agents, who he claimed threaten innocent civilians. Pritzker characterized the situation as chaotic, suggesting it might be a tactic to justify troop deployments in urban areas like Chicago. He criticized the federal response under the current administration, stating that the measures taken do not contribute to safety in Illinois.

Earlier this month, ICE initiated Operation Midway Blitz, which aims to target illegal immigrants involved in crime within Chicago and Illinois, highlighting ongoing tension between federal policies and state sanctuary laws.
