Mamdani’s $65M proposal to make NYC a safe haven for transgender youth

Mamdani’s $65M proposal to make NYC a safe haven for transgender youth

Zohran Mamdani Emerges as Front Runner in NYC Mayoral Race

In a surprising turn of events, democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani is becoming a leading candidate in the New York City mayoral race. His main competitors now include former governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa, following the recent exit of current mayor Eric Adams from the race.

Mamdani’s campaign is marked by numerous far-left proposals, such as a significant investment in what he calls “gender affirming care” for people of all ages. This has raised eyebrows, as many of his ideas are deemed controversial.

During an interview in June with transgender activist Laverne Cox, Mamdani expressed his vision of NYC as a “sanctuary city” for the LGBTQIA+ community. He emphasized that, while the city should provide safe haven, it also must actively push back against rising anti-trans sentiment that he attributes to current political figures.

If elected, he pledges to create an Office for “LGBTQIA+ Affairs” and allocate $65 million towards “gender affirming care.” He believes the city needs to enhance its own services to resist federal policies he views as harmful. Mamdani suggests this could be funded through increased taxes on the wealthiest residents and corporations.

His proposal for “LGBTQIA+ Protections” outlines a distribution plan where $57 million would directly support hospitals and clinics offering these services, focusing on both transgender youth and adults. Additionally, he aims to hold accountable those facilities that refuse care, claiming this violates state laws.

“The Mamdani administration will collaborate with the NYS Attorney General and District Attorneys to investigate hospitals denying essential healthcare for trans youth,” his policy statement reads.

Further details reveal that Mamdani plans to spend $87 million on various LGBTQIA+ support services, including $30 million for housing and $20 million for mental health services.

He strongly believes that the hostile political climate facing queer and trans individuals nationwide mandates that New York City serves as a refuge. However, he’s concerned that private institutions in the city are yielding to wider anti-trans rhetoric.

Mamdani’s agenda starkly contrasts with a recent executive order from the Trump administration aiming to restrict federal funding for agencies that support hormone blockers or surgical procedures for minors. His campaign seeks to navigate these challenges by increasing reliance on local funding instead.

To bolster his plans, Mamdani proposes an 11.5% corporate profits tax and a 2% income tax increase for households making above $1 million annually. He also aims to enhance Treasury staff to help manage these efforts.

Blaze News reached out for comments from Mamdani and the White House but has yet to receive a response.
