Ford and GM Extend EV Tax Credit Program

Ford and General Motors have launched a new initiative designed to prolong the accessibility of the $7,500 US tax credit for electric vehicle leases, even after its expiration date. With the deadline approaching, electric vehicle manufacturers like Tesla are eager to finalize sales, marking the credit’s significance in consumer decisions for EV purchases.

To alleviate the effects of the $7,500 federal tax credit on EV leases, both Ford and GM are implementing measures to broaden the benefits of these subsidies. The initiative will begin by supporting their financing arms, enabling dealers to start purchasing vehicles from dealer stock.

Through these programs, down payments made through financing options will qualify for the $7,500 tax credit for the vehicle. Dealers will continue to offer leases to customers as usual, with the subsidy factored into the lease rates. This approach aims to lessen the impact of losing tax credits that have been instrumental in promoting electric vehicle adoption for over 15 years.

The cutoff for EV subsidies is set for September 30, 2025, a looming date that has led many to anticipate a noticeable decline in EV sales and leases. Automotive executives and analysts are predicting a drop in demand following the expiration of these incentives, especially with a recent surge of buyers rushing to take advantage of the credits.

Previously, it was reported that electric vehicle manufacturers are anxious about potentially losing significant incentives for consumers to purchase electric cars.

In anticipation of the deadline, Tesla and Ford are taking swift actions to benefit from the current spike in demand. Various banners on Tesla’s website alert potential buyers about the impending expiration of the tax credits, urging them to complete purchases by the end of September. Additionally, Tesla is reportedly sending reminders to customers about the necessity of finalizing a purchase to be eligible for the $7,500 discount before the cutoff.
