Notorious Climate Scientist Michael Mann Steps Down from Position Following Charlie Kirk's 'Hitler' Posts

Michael Mann Resigns from UPenn Following Controversial Comments

Climate scientist Michael Mann has stepped down from his position at the University of Pennsylvania after facing backlash for a provocative comment he made in response to the assassination of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk.

Mann took to social media to characterize the killing as “white to white violence,” and shared various inflammatory remarks about Kirk, describing him as “Trump’s Hitler youth head.” Although Mann later tried to clarify his statements, he ultimately announced his resignation from his role in climate science and policy advocacy.

In a statement on his personal website, Mann expressed that he had reached a point where his advocacy work conflicted with the nonpartisan responsibilities of his academic role at a university known for its neutrality. He mentioned, “I don’t feel like I can disregard the public scholarship and advocacy I am doing, especially right now.”

Neither Mann nor UPenn responded to requests for comment regarding his resignation.

Mann later deleted several of his posts and attempted to explain his actions, admitting he “overlooked” the inflammatory nature of his comments. He reflected, “I simply agreed with a broad criticism of Ezra Klein’s assertion that Kirk is ‘pursuing politics the right way.’ I don’t approve of the inappropriate language used to describe Kirk, and I removed it.”

This isn’t Mann’s first brush with controversy. He had previously faced legal scrutiny for allegedly providing misleading information to a court regarding a case against his conservative critics.

Kirk had been active in fostering dialogue on college campuses but was tragically murdered at a September 10 event at Utah Valley University. The circumstances of his death revealed troubling ideological motivations linked to leftist extremism.

Mann’s resignation adds him to a growing list of educators who have lost their positions over their reactions to Kirk’s death.
