Goolsbee from the Fed cautions about how a shutdown might affect economic data announcements

Impact of Government Shutdowns on Economic Data

On Tuesday, Austan Ghoolsby, President of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, indicated that if the anticipated economic data is not released due to potential government shutdowns, the central bank would explore alternative data sources during its meeting in October.

A shutdown is set to take place at 12:01 AM EST on Wednesday if Congress does not agree on funding extensions. The House has already passed a continuing resolution, but Senate discussions have stalled as Democrats are advocating for ongoing funding for lapsed healthcare subsidies. In the event of a partial shutdown, the Labor Department has announced it will suspend all economic data releases.

Ghoulsby expressed his concern during a conversation with Fox Business Network’s Edward Lawrence, stating, “The Bureau of Labor Statistics is our best data source. It’s frustrating not having official statistics while we’re navigating what it means to be in a transitional economy.”

Partisan Standoffs Hindering Economic Insights

The Labor Bureau is slated to release data on initial unemployment claims this Thursday, with September data expected on Friday. Additionally, the Consumer Price Index for September, which covers various everyday expenses like gasoline and groceries, will be made available on October 15th.

Inflation Remains Stubbornly High

With the Federal Reserve’s next policy meeting scheduled for October 28th and 29th, Ghoulsby noted, “We’ve introduced labor market metrics at the Chicago Fed, which pull from 11 different data sources. While some of these are official figures, many are from the private sector, allowing us to predict the unemployment rate in real-time.”

He added that in the absence of official data, the focus would shift to current adoption rates, layoffs, and unemployment figures as indicators of the economic landscape.
