Teen in Florida staged his own kidnapping and shot himself in the leg, according to authorities

A Florida teenager has been accused of falsely claiming he was shot and killed, which resulted in a large police response and an Amber Alert. Sheriff Billy Woods of Marion County shared the details in a Facebook video, stating that 17-year-old Caden Speight’s allegations were untrue.

The situation began unfolding on Friday when Speight sent messages to his family, suggesting he had been killed and hinting at foul play. This prompted the issuance of an Amber Alert on September 25, indicating he was last seen wearing a T-shirt and jeans, possibly with four men in a brightly colored van.

Authorities launched an extensive search involving detectives, aviation units, and ground teams. However, by the next day, they found no evidence to support Speight’s claims of abduction and determined he might have simply been camping, having purchased a bike and camping gear shortly before the incident.

Speight was eventually located safe in Williston, about 20 miles southwest of Gainesville. Woods remarked on the considerable efforts made by law enforcement to locate the teen, mentioning that their initial understanding was completely misleading. For example, while evidence of a gunshot was found, it quickly became clear that Speight had not been injured in any attack.

The Sheriff noted several inconsistencies in Speight’s story, with some witnesses contradicting his account. He stated that Speight rode his bike towards Williston, while the responding teams were left to consider the worst possible scenarios.

Woods further clarified that the injuries Speight claimed could not be attributed to an assailant. As the investigation continues, the Sheriff has not ruled out potential charges against Speight, although he’s currently being questioned while his parents have opted not to engage with investigators.
