Eric Dane Continues the Fight Against ALS
Eric Dane is still holding on in his battle with ALS.
This week, the actor was seen in an electric wheelchair at an airport in Washington, DC, where he offered words of encouragement to a paparazzo.
“Preserve your faith, man,” Dane said in a strong voice, as captured in a video. He also expressed gratitude, replying with “Thank you, brother.”
Wearing a black jacket and pants paired with white Nike sneakers, he was assisted by an aide as he made his way through the airport.
Sources indicated that the 52-year-old father is facing his illness with courage. The challenges of his condition are evident, yet he aims to enjoy every moment. “He understands that tomorrow isn’t guaranteed, so he wants to make the most of today,” one source remarked.
According to the same source, he hopes to live fully without having others mourn his situation while he’s still navigating it. “He wants people around him to truly live,” they added.
Since announcing his ALS diagnosis in April, the visible effects of the disease have become more pronounced. In the recent video, Dane’s voice sounded resilient, despite the evident struggle he faces.
His wife, Rebecca Gayhart, has shared that their two daughters, 15-year-old Billy and 13-year-old Georgia, are finding it difficult to cope with their father’s illness. She described their experience, saying, “It’s heartbreaking. My daughter is really struggling, and we’re just trying to get through this tough time.”
Gayhart also mentioned that they have enlisted the help of a professional therapist and are focusing on maintaining hope, dignity, and love during this challenging period.
Earlier this month, Dane participated in a campaign video for the I Am ALS organization, promoting the need for accelerated research into neurodegenerative diseases.
In an interview with Diane Sawyer for “Good Morning America” back in June, Dane revealed that he lost all function in his right arm and expressed concern about possibly losing functionality in his legs as well. He noted that he anticipates only having a few more months of use left in his left arm.
As he spoke slowly and sometimes stumbled over words, the effects of the disease were noticeable. Despite these challenges, Dane remains determined in his fight.
