Norovirus Outbreak on Royal Caribbean Ship
Royal Caribbean International is currently managing a norovirus outbreak that has affected nearly 100 individuals aboard one of its ships.
Reports indicate that over 90 passengers and four crew members became ill on the Royal Caribbean International’s Serenade of the Seas. As noted by the CDC, these figures represent the total cases reported throughout the voyage, not necessarily those sick simultaneously. The primary symptoms identified include diarrhea and vomiting.
The cruise line promptly notified the CDC about the outbreak occurring on September 8.
“The health and safety of our guests, crew, and the communities we visit remain our top priority,” a spokesperson stated. They emphasized that the company adheres to strict cleaning protocols designed to maintain a high standard of hygiene, often exceeding public health recommendations.
In light of the recent outbreak, Royal Caribbean has heightened its cleaning efforts, conducted testing on samples related to gastrointestinal illnesses, isolated affected passengers and crew, and consulted with the CDC regarding ship sanitation practices.
The Serenade of the Seas is scheduled to depart from San Diego on September 19 and arrive in Miami on October 2. Meanwhile, the CDC advises healthy passengers to practice good hygiene, including frequent hand washing, staying well-rested, and hydrating. Those feeling unwell are encouraged to report to the ship’s medical center and follow provided guidelines.
This incident marks the 19th outbreak on cruise ships tracked by the CDC this year. According to their records, norovirus has been the causative agent in 14 of these outbreaks, with others being labeled as “unknown,” one attributed to E. coli, and another to cigatera, a type of food poisoning linked to certain fish.
