Planned Parenthood Closes Final Clinics in Louisiana
On Tuesday, Planned Parenthood shut down its last two clinics in Louisiana. This decision leaves the state without any providers of abortion services, making it the most populous state in the U.S. without such options.
The closures occurred in Baton Rouge and New Orleans, positioning Louisiana alongside Wyoming, North Dakota, and Mississippi as states lacking Planned Parenthood clinics. This move comes after significant federal funding cuts for abortion providers, something pushed by Republicans through recent legislation.
Louisiana’s Governor, Jeff Landry, celebrated the closure, stating it’s a win for mothers and babies alike. This sentiment highlights the broader political context surrounding abortion rights in the state.
The GOP’s legislation, which was enacted in July, has hindered Medicaid funding for abortion providers. Although a federal judge initially blocked these changes following a lawsuit from Planned Parenthood, an appeals court lifted the injunction earlier this month, allowing the cuts to take effect.
Planned Parenthood has cautioned that more clinics could close in response to federal funding reductions. So far, at least 41 facilities have ceased operations, as noted by the Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America organization. Additionally, a significant Planned Parenthood facility in Houston has also shut down, further signaling the impact of funding issues.
Melaney Linton, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast, expressed regret over the closures, indicating that they stem from ongoing political battles rather than being a desired decision. She criticized lawmakers for attempting to control healthcare access and blamed them for undermining public health infrastructure.
There’s been controversy surrounding Planned Parenthood concerning allegations of selling fetal tissue, further complicating the narrative around the organization. They reported performing over 400,000 abortions in the 2023-24 fiscal year while receiving more than $700 million in government funding. However, private donations have seen a decline of 31% from the previous year, totaling $684.1 million.
As of now, Planned Parenthood has not commented on this particular development.
