Thomas Markle, Meghan Markle’s father, found himself trapped on the 19th floor of an apartment building in the Philippines following a devastating earthquake, which was the deadliest in over ten years. He had relocated to the Philippines earlier this year and was still stuck as of Wednesday after a powerful 6.9 magnitude quake claimed the lives of dozens.
In a social media update, Samantha Markle shared her concern, noting that their 81-year-old father was unable to walk and was effectively trapped. While the situation seemed dire, she mentioned that he was currently safe and had a plan to exit the building, hoping that no serious aftershocks would occur.
The retired television lighting director had moved to the Philippines to start anew, hoping for a fresh chapter in his life alongside his son, Thomas Jr.
Meanwhile, rescue teams were working tirelessly, utilizing backhoes and sniffer dogs to seek out survivors in collapsed structures. The earthquake has already led to at least 69 fatalities and over 200 injuries, with the death toll likely to rise as aftershocks continued throughout Wednesday.
A clear number of missing individuals had yet to be reported, adding to the uncertainty and fear in the wake of such a catastrophic event. The damage was widespread, and many people were affected while they were asleep or relaxing at home, which makes the tremors even more unsettling.
