Leicy Santos: A Colombian Trailblazer in the NWSL
Leicy Santos has made history as the first Colombian player to join the NWSL. After five years with Atletico de Madrid in Spain, she made her way to the capital last year.
“Kickin’It” is a light-hearted Q&A segment designed to help players step away from the usual soccer banter.
So, let’s get to know the people behind the players a bit better.
What do you like to do in your free time?
Leicy Santos: I tend to use my free time to learn new things. Right now, I’m really into real estate courses. Sometimes, I find myself getting into other subjects I’m passionate about. I enjoy growing intellectually and often dedicate my spare time to that. But, on the entertainment side, I feel like I need to catch more movies. The language barrier here makes it tricky. Back when I was in Madrid, I used to go to the movies a lot with friends, and that’s where I really want to put my focus now.
Do you have a favorite movie genre?
Santos: I usually watch a variety of films, but if I have to pick, I always lean toward Disney movies. They really lift my spirits. There’s something about the messages they convey about living life fully, without forgetting our inner child. With negativity all around us, those movies help me reconnect and unwind.
How about coffee? Any favorites?
Santos: I always prefer Colombian coffee. My go-to is pretty basic—think drip or American coffee. It’s got to be high-quality, though. When I have great coffee, I can truly savor its flavors and textures.
What’s your favorite food?
Santos: My favorite food, hands down, is my mom’s cooking. There’s this fish called “bocachico” back home, and it’s literally my top choice—it brings back so many memories.
If you could travel anywhere, where would you go?
Santos: I love exploring places with different cultures. I’ve always wanted to visit Bali, Thailand, and Japan. I’ve been to Japan with my national team, but I really want to go back and actually enjoy the trip.
If you could take three things from Colombia to Washington, what would they be?
Santos: Definitely my family, some good coffee, and arepas.
