“Just Like That”: Democrat Rep Takes Pride in His Party Closing the Government

Government Shutdown Triggered by Impasse

Michigan Democrat Shri Taneder claimed his party played a role in the stalemate that led to the government shutdown.

The partial closure of the federal government took effect at 12:01 AM Eastern Time on Wednesday after the Senate was unable to pass a continuous resolution on Tuesday.

In a social media post, Taneder shared a brief video discussing the shutdown and noted, “House Republicans will not return to DC until October 7th. Until then, it certainly appears that the government will continue to be closed. My office is open and ready to serve as usual.”

Taneder was back in Detroit following the Republicans’ absence. He remarked, “We’re now ensuring Americans receive the health care they need, even if that means shutting down the government.”

Democrats are pushing for over $1 trillion in funding for various initiatives, which includes restoring public broadcasting funds that were affected by a retirement package passed in July.

Additionally, Taneder introduced a resolution aimed at the deportation of Kilmer Abrego Garcia, a member of El Salvador’s MS-13 gang. In April, the Trump administration released detailed evidence against him.

Abrego Garcia was arrested in Tennessee on charges of human trafficking during a traffic stop but was released in 2022 at the request of the Biden administration’s FBI. He returned to the U.S. on June 6th to face federal court charges related to the 2022 incident.
