Winsome Earle-Sears Makes Gains Within Margin of Error Against Abigail Spanberger in Virginia Governor's Race

Virginia Governor’s Race Tightens Between Earle-Sears and Spanberger

A recent poll from A2 Insights reveals that Republican Lt. Colonel Winsome Earle-Sears has significantly closed the gap with Democrat Abigail Spanberger in the race for Virginia’s governorship. With the election approaching in November, the contest now falls within the margin of error.

According to the A2 Insights survey conducted from September 26th to 28th, Earle-Sears stands at 47.7%, while Spanberger is just 3 points behind at 44.6%. This narrowing margin indicates an increasingly competitive race as voters prepare to make their decisions.

The closeness of the polling comes amid a series of controversies surrounding Spanberger’s campaign. In September, she faced backlash for a phrase often used by her supporters—encouraging voters to “let your anger fuel you.” In contrast, Earle-Sears has emphasized a message of unity, asserting that “Virginia is for her lovers, not her rage.”

Spanberger’s stance on the involvement of men in women’s sports has also been a topic of contention. During recent media appearances, she indicated that issues regarding this matter would be handled “one by one,” lacking a definitive position. Meanwhile, Earle-Sears remains clearly opposed to the involvement of biological men in women’s sports and private spaces.

The Democratic candidates are facing further scrutiny regarding their connections and approval ratings. Dot Hefron, a member of the Chesterfield County Board of Education, stirred controversy by praising the assassination of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk. This has led to calls for her resignation from Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin, with Spanberger later condemning any justification for political violence. Additionally, there were reports of campaign staff celebrating Kirk’s assassination on social media, which prompted Earle-Sears and the Virginia Republican Party to call for Spanberger to sever ties with those involved.

Immigration policy has also emerged as a key issue in the campaign. Spanberger confirmed her intention, if elected, to collaborate with U.S. Immigration Customs Enforcement to turn Virginia into a sanctuary state, further igniting discussions about public safety. Youngkin criticized her for prioritizing “dangerous criminals” over the safety of Virginians. Earle-Sears, however, has pledged to support stricter enforcement of immigration laws.

Spanberger hasn’t just faced local criticism; she has drawn negative attention from figures on the national stage as well. Former President Donald Trump criticized her for her stance on women’s sports and immigration, pointing out her reluctance to oppose biological males in girls’ competitions. Earle-Sears echoed these sentiments, asserting that Virginians need to reject policies that risk the safety of women and families.

The campaign trail has also been marred by inflammatory rhetoric. In Arlington, demonstrators equated Spanberger’s approach to transgender policies with quarantine, which led to backlash from various political leaders. Spanberger herself labeled the displays as “racist and abominable.”
