Carlos Rodon pushes through challenges to help Yankees in Game 2

Yankees’ Carlos Rodon Shines Despite Challenges

Carlos Rodon showcased his strengths as a pitcher, though fielding may not be his forte.

It was a promising start that allowed the Yankees to gear up for another game on Thursday.

The left-handed pitcher faced some hurdles, surrendering three runs and three walks, while giving up four hits over four innings. The Yankees edged past the Red Sox with a close score of 4-3 in Game 2 on Wednesday.

“It was definitely a tough outing,” Rodon remarked after helping the Yankees secure a decisive Game 3 in the Wild Card series. “They managed to string some good at-bats together, but we had some excellent defensive plays behind me.”

Although there were impressive plays by his teammates, Rodon picked an unfortunate moment—a first error for him since 2021.

Boston positioned runners on first and second without attempting a bunt from Nick Soguard. Rodon sent the ball towards the third baseline and delivered a grounder to Jazz Chisholm Jr.

He loaded the bases effectively while striking out Rob Levsnider, but a single from Trevor Story brought in two runs, leveling the game.

As Rodon settled into his rhythm, he pitched six innings and threw 91 pitches, pushing through a challenging lineup and facing some scrutiny from Aaron Boone—especially since the Red Sox had utilized six relief pitchers for a bullpen strategy.

In the middle of the game, Rodon tied things up and found himself in a stretch of heated action that had Fernando Cruz warming up. After walking Alex Bregman on four consecutive pitches, Boone approached the mound but chose not to call for Cruz.

Rodon explained, “After being with Boone for three years, you start to pick up on his signals. Sometimes he makes quick decisions, and I sensed that. But when he didn’t signal to the bullpen, I thought I might get another chance.”

In a twist of fate, Rodon responded, stating, “I’m here to stay.” He connected with Romy Gonzalez, facilitating a ground play to Carlos Narvaez, who then deftly turned it into a double play with Ryan McMahon.

That evening, Rodon certainly needed support—especially from Cruz, who got him out of a seventh-inning jam. An RBI single from Austin Wells in the eighth cemented the final run for the Yankees.

As he wrapped up, Rodon expressed optimism, saying, “I’m eager for tomorrow; I won and made it through this one.”
