Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders sparked interest in the locker room recently by mimicking gestures while responding to reporters. Interestingly, he was moving his mouth and using hand signals, but no actual words came out, as a reporter continued to seek a verbal response from the Browns’ third-string quarterback.
This peculiar behavior seems to stem from comments made by former NFL head coach Rex Ryan on ESPN’s “Get Up” earlier in the week. Ryan criticized the Browns, suggesting their quarterback situation was an embarrassment. He expressed frustration that Sanders wasn’t stepping up and that the entire league was aware of his potential. “Stop being that embarrassment,” Ryan stated, implying that Sanders should be more proactive in showcasing his talent.
Sanders’ antics followed the decision to bench veteran quarterback Joe Flacco, who is 40 years old. Rookie Dilong Gabriel, drafted ahead of Sanders, is being given a chance to start as the Browns prepare for their upcoming game against the Minnesota Vikings. Coach Kevin Stefanski made this move following a rough start to the season, where the team is currently sitting at 1-3.
Gabriel has already served as Flacco’s backup, and with the coach’s trust leaning toward Gabriel after pre-season performances, it seems like a turning point for the team. Flacco’s struggles, with just two touchdowns against six interceptions, contributed to the decision for a change at quarterback. The Browns are hoping for a fresh start and a change in fortune as they head overseas for their next match.
For now, Sanders remains in the third-string position, while Gabriel is set to take on the starting role. Interestingly, amidst the competitive dynamics, Sanders had a brief preseason appearance, achieving a decent record with two touchdown passes before sustaining an injury. Gabriel’s experience in the regular season, although minimal, will likely play a significant role moving forward.
