Trump Presidential Library Approved for Miami Site
Florida officials have taken steps to establish President Donald Trump’s presidential library in downtown Miami, right next to the well-known Freedom Tower. On Tuesday, Republican Governor Ron DeSantis and the Florida Cabinet decided to grant a 2.63-acre parcel on Biscayne Boulevard to the Trump Presidential Library Foundation, with the condition that construction begins within five years.
Eric Trump, the president’s son and a council member of the foundation, expressed his approval of this decision. He described the library as a tribute to influential leaders who have made significant contributions to history. While there are no detailed building plans available yet, he contrasted their vision for the library with former President Barack Obama’s center, which is under construction in Chicago. Eric remarked that the library will be a beautiful addition to Miami’s skyline, unlike what he described as Obama’s “prison-like structure.”
The site currently serves as a parking lot for employees at Miami-Dade College’s Wolfson campus and is located near the historic Freedom Tower, a symbol for many Cuban exiles seeking refuge in the United States. The area surrounding the site is filled with luxurious high-rise apartments and offers views of the Kaseya Center, home to the NBA’s Miami Heat, and the nearby cruise liner docks.
Interestingly, the land was valued at over $66 million, though some estimates suggest it could sell for much more. The library will be part of the National Archives and Records Administration’s (NARA) system, which maintains documents from U.S. presidents after their terms end. Thus, it’s expected that the Miami site could function similarly to Obama’s center.
DeSantis has publicly endorsed the plan, asserting that Florida would be honored to house Trump’s library, which he believes would spur economic development. The approval of the property transfer requires a decision from a body that includes the Attorney General, Chief Financial Officer, Agriculture Commissioner, and the Governor.
Interestingly, there were previous discussions about potential sites in Boca Raton and outside Miami. This move seems to indicate an effort to prevent local opposition to presidential library developments, an initiative spearheaded by DeSantis this year.
The Trump Presidential Library Foundation also includes Tiffany Trump’s husband, Michael Boulos, and Trump’s lawyer, James Killie.
