Cruz: Trump’s job cuts from the shutdown will make Democrats ‘cry and complain’

Cruz: Trump shutdown job cuts will cause Democrats 'to scream and weep'

Cruz Comments on Trump Administration Layoff Threats Amid Shutdowns

Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) recently remarked that the potential job cuts under President Trump during federal shutdowns have sent “screams” through Democratic ranks, suggesting that altering the approach to fundraising speeches is beneficial.

“What [White House Office of Management and Budget Director] Russ Vought did here really shifted the situation. [Senator] Chuck Schumer [D-N.Y.] and the Democrats are forcing a shutdown, and President Trump is using this as a chance to eliminate leftist priorities. They might get a notice for a few days, and then face layoffs that align with Trump’s agenda,” Cruz explained.

“I think this approach is effective; it’s making the Democrats in Congress really vocal,” he told Larry Kudlow.

On Wednesday, Vought updated GOP lawmakers that federal layoffs were imminent. The White House press secretary also mentioned during a briefing that these layoffs were “immediate.”

Vice President Mike Pence, however, appeared to contradict Cruz’s remarks about the administration targeting political opponents at a press conference that same day.

“We are not focusing on federal agencies based on political reasons; our aim is to ensure essential services can keep operating,” Pence stated. “Let’s be real—if this situation drags on, we could face a need to let go of employees for even longer.”

Typically, government shutdowns mean non-essential federal employees work without pay until funding is restored, at which point they receive back pay. This time around, the Trump administration has shown interest in permanently retaining some employees, a strategy likely to face legal challenges.

Cruz anticipated that ongoing shutdowns would exacerbate divisions among Democrats.

“The next lunch with Democrats is bound to be filled with tension once they see pink slips affecting the EPA, the Department of Labor, and the IRS. Suddenly, they might find themselves scrambling to advance their hiring plans,” Cruz stated during the interview.

“The shutdown will come to an end once Democrats recognize that President Trump has made significant strides in economic freedom, largely in response to their outbursts.”
