Pope Leo XIV: Supporters of the death penalty are not truly pro-life

Pope Leo XIV Critiques U.S. Politics and Immigration Policies

Pope Leo XIV made a bold statement regarding the death penalty, claiming that those who support it are “not really for life.” This remark came during his comments on U.S. politics.

On Tuesday, the Pope expressed, “I am against abortion, but those who say I am in favor of the death penalty are not actually for life.”

The Pope was also critical of the Trump administration’s approach to immigration, describing the treatment of illegal immigrants as “inhuman.”

“While I stand against abortion, I am deeply troubled by the inhumane treatment of immigrants in the United States,” he stated.

These comments were made as he answered questions from reporters outside his residence in Castel Gandolfo.

Pope Leo XIV also commented on Cardinal Cupich’s decision to honor Senator Dick Durbin, known for his anti-death penalty stance: “It’s essential to consider many issues related to church teachings,” he remarked, underscoring Durbin’s defense of immigration rights.

However, his support for this recognition faced criticism from ten American bishops who took issue with Durbin’s pro-abortion stance.

Interestingly, the Pope has faced backlash for recently celebrating the progress at a climate conference. He emphasized the importance of climate action during a speech at the 10th anniversary of former Pope Francis’ ecological efforts.

Addressing an audience of about 1,000 representatives from environmental and indigenous groups, Pope Leo urged governments to intensify their efforts in combating climate change. He asserted that the upcoming UN Climate Conference should “listen to the cries of the earth and the cries of the poor.”

He noted, “We can raise hope by demanding that leaders act promptly.”

Pope Leo XIV’s comments reflect a complex interplay of social issues, illustrating the church’s position in contemporary political discourse. These themes resonate not only among his followers but also across broader societal lines.
