Apple Shifts Focus from Vision Pro to Smart Glasses

Apple has decided to pause its planned update for the Vision Pro mixed-reality headset and redirect its resources toward developing smart glasses that aim to compete with offerings from Meta Platforms, as per a report from Bloomberg News on Wednesday, citing sources familiar with the situation.

The company had been gearing up to release a more affordable and lighter version of its headset, known as the N100, slated for 2027. However, internal communications revealed that Apple informed its employees last week about reallocating staff to expedite the work on the upcoming glasses.

Since its launch in February 2024, the $3,499 Vision Pro has faced challenges in maintaining interest, especially with limited mainstream content available and competition from lower-priced devices like Meta’s Quest.

According to the report, Apple is working on at least two smart glasses models. The first, labeled N50, will connect with an iPhone but won’t have its own display. Apple plans to reveal this model next year, ahead of its release in 2027.

The second version, which will feature a display, is set for 2028. Nonetheless, the company is looking to speed up development of this product to compete directly with the Meta Ray-Ban Display, the report noted.

In September, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg showcased the company’s first consumer-ready smart glasses priced at $800, featuring a built-in display and a new wristband controller during Meta’s Connect event. Meta also introduced a new pair of Oakley-branded glasses called Vanguard meant for athletes.

Apple’s upcoming glasses are expected to emphasize voice interaction and artificial intelligence, according to the report.

The company did not provide any comments when contacted by Reuters.

During its annual product launch event last month, Apple presented an updated range of iPhones and unveiled a slimmer iPhone Air. However, there was a noticeable absence of any clear strategy showing how Apple intends to catch up in the AI sector compared to rivals like Google, who recently demonstrated its Gemini AI model in its flagship phones.
